Two and one half years under construction, this fantastic work of art is perhaps one of the largest sandstone sculptures in the world. Commissioned by the owners, the artist Ra Paulette created this unique work of art in a sandstone butte on the side of Black Mesa.
The cathedral windows look out to the Ojo Caliente River Valley and the majestic Jemez Mountains in the distance. The interior of this spiritual structure is beautifully hand carved, inlayed with stones from the surrounding mesa and mirrors to provide reflected light. A place of meditation and personal rejuvenation, the shrine has been the site of numerous intimate weddings, small musical concerts, storytelling and other special events. The Sandstone Shrine is a must see while visiting the Rancho de San Juan.
